Acetone's good, but the issue with it is it's very hard on your skin.

I heard white spirit is the best to clean them in, cos petrol will leave a residue when it dries? is that right? lining the bearings back up with the clear plastic spacer looks really fiddley!!!

NKwan is also correct. If you are not using a pure alcohol such as nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol (these are usually watered down), you will want to dry them immediately. Probably better to use a can of compressed air rather than a blow dryer though.
Sorry

Not really. Its just not good for a lube.

If your lazy like me you take your bearings out leave all the casings on and dump them in a jar of WD40. Its a penetrative so it'll work most of the junk out by its self, just stir them around every few minutes. Then take them and dry off excess then blow the rest out with compressed air. Then i just re-lube them with a better lubricating penetrative spray like lanox (Heavy duty anti corrosion lubricant with lanolin. made by the same people as inox) which has lanolin in it which repels water.

Neither of the sprays have a negative effect on plastics or rubbers either so bearings with rubber shields (like my reds) are fine.

did you clean them before applying the grease? If you dont clean them, youre turning all that dust n stuff mixed with grease into something with a more semi-muddy consistancy(i think).

..."really spinny wheels" is what you would want. Clean them up and then grease them and they'll spin faster. Faster is better(just dont be going down the freeway at alike speeds).

i left my bearings in white spirit for bout an hour took them out and dried them, at this point they span really well. i then put on the grease and put the covers and c clamps back on and thats when they didnt spin very much. my dad said that the grease we used was thick... does this affect it? should i go out and buy thinner stuff??
